Danpal Latin America Conference 2019

Danpal recently held its latest biennial Danpal Latin American Conference 2019, brilliantly hosted, with the help of our extended Danpal family in the Dominican Republic. The conference, which ran between the 03 to the 06 June 2019, was well-attended by our partners from 9 different countries. The venue for this year’s conference, chosen by Danpal, was the centrally located resort town, of Punta Cana.

The beaches of Punta Cana, are renowned for their picture-perfect quality and remain a world-wide drawcard. Our 24 delegates, however, were gathered together and focused for three days of training, expertly presented by our team from Danpal. The three days ran from 09h00 each morning and was kept on schedule, with the help of our regional manager from Chile, Paula Abrigo. During this time we also shared our experiences in marketing our brand and together generated new ideas on how to best grow market share.

We boldly kicked off our conference with a brief but much needed introductory presentation, delivered expertly by Paula. This was then followed by technical presentations on our more advanced solutions, based on standard Danpal systems. The importance of these presentations cannot be over-emphasized, as an intimate knowledge of our systems, is crucial for their correct implementation. This lead on to a more detailed focus on our newer systems, such as the new Danpatherm RK7 Roofing and Everbright Roofing Solutions. Our chief-engineer, Israel Wielgus, was as usual on top form, providing us, his blend of technical information – peppered with his own brand of humor.

There were several impressive case-studies presented by our members from Mexico, Chile, Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Argentina, and Costa Rica. These projects demonstrated the successful use of various Danpal building envelope solutions, for both facades and roofs. All in all, it was an impressive display of Danpalon 3DLITE, Danpalon Compact, NM and even Danpatherm K7 systems featuring integrated LED’s.

On day three, we took the time to re-focus on marketing, an essential element, necessary for any successful business. Our LATAM area manager, Paula Abrigo, once again took center stage and presented on our latest focus and the digital tools that we rely on to reach our global market base. These marketing tools and the processes we have implemented, provide the backbone of our current efforts. During these presentations, we encouraged our extended Danpal family from across Latin America, to engage with us as we proposed the inclusion of these technologies.

It was not all hard work and presentations however, as evenings were spent networking with our counterparts at the welcoming La Cana Steak House. The eatery takes its name from the sugar cane crops that surround the town of La Romana, and provided the perfect backdrop, for time spent liaising with colleagues. All in all, it was a pleasure using the time getting to know and network with all of our various delegates.

A few key points were made clear to us, during this time we set-aside and spent together. Amongst them, Danpal recognizes the need more than ever, to provide our global distributors and partners, localized support. Sometimes, this can mean adapting to the needs of each market’s customs, languages, and regulations. Importantly, this conference also gave us the opportunity to engage with our valued global family, and to reaffirm our message of Light Architecture. Finally, we can confidently report back, that whilst all who attended, provided us with invaluable feedback. All who attended also learned more about how we can all work together to continue to grow our global market share. – Adios, y hasta la proxima!

Rainscreen cladding helps prevent mold from developing

We know when cold and flu season is upon us because we become very aware of how much contact we have with one another. We use hand sanitizer faithfully so that we keep our hands free of any germs we might up. But not all illnesses come from human contact. The structural equivalent of cold and flu season for a building is all year around, 365 days a year. Building health has a lot to do with human health. We spend a great deal of our time inside buildings; most of our day, in fact, is spent inside unless we have outdoor jobs. Cubby House Challenge

Grimshaw is one of five practices selected to design and build a cubby for the Kids Under Cover 2017 Cubby House Challenge. The five cubbies were auctioned at a VIP event at the 2017 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, raising AUD$162,000 for the Kids Under Cover’s Studio Program, an early intervention strategy which helps to prevent youth homelessness.

MySpace, the cubby designed by Grimshaw, fetched AUD$21,000 and was the recipient of the Kids Choice Award, and the Most Imaginative and Interactive Award. We are honoured to have been a part of the 2017 Cubby House Challenge.

Through MySpace, Grimshaw has reconceptualised the traditional cubby, transforming the rigid building form into one that allows children to create their own space by manipulating various sized blocks across four levels. How they enter the cubby and arrange the interior is up to them – it is a non-static space that children can make their own and reinvent as they desire.

The moveable blocks have multiple uses to reinforce this sense of ownership and flexibility. They can be used to fill voids or provide openings, as furniture or storage and to house secret treasures and trinkets.

Two key workshops were held to develop the concept for MySpace. The first invited children to contribute their ideas of what constitutes the ultimate cubby. A space for flexibility, creativity and retreat were recurring themes, with orange a popular choice of colour.

The second workshop was a design charrette which offered Grimshaw’s architects the opportunity to recall their childhood cubby house dreams. The ideas were harnessed into a single concept with a strong connection to one of the architect’s memories of playing with the wooden crates in his father’s fruit and vegetable warehouse; crates were positioned to create voids to hide in or used as stepping stones to create a flexible oasis akin to a human-scale Lego set.

This concept was developed through the ethos of Grimshaw’s architectural practice; strong conceptual legibility, innovation and a rigorous approach to detailing, all underpinned by the principles of humane, enduring and sustainable design.
In turn, MySpace has been realized as a bespoke shelter which encourages confidence and creative play while offering a finely crafted installation fit for the most urbane of backyards.

Conceived as an elegant piece of joinery, the cubby’s frame has been built using 75mmx75mm Tasmanian Oak hardwood timber beams. Each member has been machine cut and routed to form a cross profile that integrates horizontal rails, allowing the boxes to be safely and easily maneuvered. With each member dowelled and glue joined to form a rigid connection there are no visible fixings. This ensures that the frame can facilitate safe vertical and horizontal movement and provide railings that may be easily held on to by small hands. Rubber matting is incorporated in the floor as a further safety measure.

The boxes within the cubby are fabricated from pine plywood. Each box is wrapped in high density foam, then covered with an external-grade colored fabric.

With a translucent polycarbonate (Danpal) roof and façade, MySpace provides a shelter which offers children a sense of concealment while providing visibility to the outside. The polycarbonate cladding system provides a clean façade finish by concealing all screw fixings. To complement the notion of a safe hideout, a yellow periscope peaks out from the roof to allow children to keep watch and observe their surroundings. Page 1 of 2 Lighting is another key feature of the cubby. Our design incorporates LED strip lighting into each internal corner of the frame to illuminate the interior and allow the cubby to ‘glow’ at night.

Grimshaw has worked closely and collaboratively with the builder and suppliers to deliver a cubby that is of the highest quality while offering a reconfigurable space to keep children intrigued – a true team effort for the benefit of the children that may make MySpace their own as well as those whom it may prevent youth homelessness for.

Architect’s Statement

There was always something exciting about creating your own cubby house as a kid. Whether stacking cushions from the family sofa, draping bed sheets over the ironing board or arranging cardboard boxes to form enclosures, it allowed a sense of freedom to create and play, to be the master of one’s own universe.

This freedom of creative play is actively explored with MySpace, a cubby house designed by Grimshaw for Kids Under Cover, a not-for-profit organization which raises funds to help prevent youth homelessness.

Through MySpace we have reconceptualised the cubby, transforming the rigid building form into one that allows children to create their own space by manipulating various sized blocks over three levels. How they enter the space and arrange the interior is up to them – it is a space they can make their own and reinvent as they desire.

The second workshop was an in-house design charrette offering our architects the opportunity to recall their own childhood cubby house dreams. In keeping with Grimshaw’s architectural practice, the cubby was developed from a strong concept, with the final design resulting from a deep interest in adaptable and flexible architecture and craftsmanship.

MySpace encapsulates childhood aspirations as well as a desire to empower children through their own creative play.

Without careful planning, a large glass window can flood a space with painfully bright light and can act as a lens that will increase the amount of heat in a room. Because of these two factors, people who work in spaces that have large, glass windows frequently add window shades and curtains that can obviate the benefits of having a large expanse of transparent material capable of admitting natural light.

The result is the classic office or large living space that is rendered dark and gloomy thanks to heavy curtains. Furthermore, in warm climates, the energy savings of having natural light is heavily offset by added air conditioning needed to compensate for excessive solar gain. One might think that because of the ability for a glass window to warm up a room, that it would be an ideal situation for colder climates where daylight is minimal at certain seasons. Sadly, even in the winter months when daylight is admitted for shorter amounts of time, simple window glass has some serious drawbacks. Although it heats up a room during the day, it also allows heat to escape back out of the room – particularly at night. Furthermore, at certain times of the day – frequently at daybreak or at dusk, the lower angle of the sun’s rays can create a blinding glare in rooms where windows face either east or west. Here, again, inhabitants will use heavy curtains to cut the glare or they will use insulated drapes to minimize the natural heat exchange capability of glass.

Natural light or light therapy has even been shown to have a positive effect on Alzheimer’s disease patients, particularly the ones who have difficulty sleeping at night. When the light was administered in the morning, it was found that it reduced aggression sometimes displayed by some Alzheimer’s patients in the afternoon. For the rest of us, sunlight is simply uplifting.

ArchDaily is an online news source for the newest, trendiest and best in architecture. Recently they create a “Top One Hundred” page, featuring stunning examples of architecture. Among the recent editorial picks for this feature page is Hwa Hun, which means Blooming House in Korean. Irohe KHM Architects, the designers, made expensive use of Danpalon, a material from Danpal, as well as the Danpal Façade System in creating the “Blooming House.”

A Home with an Unusual Design

Located in Seoul, near Bukhansan Mountain, Hwa Hun is constructed using a special design so that it appears to unfold like a blossom amid the attractively constructed, but more ordinary, dwellings nearby. The bright exterior presents an irregular roof line that forms the outside “petals” of the house.

Inside, level areas of garden are connected by stairs and walkways to flow from the forecourt garden, up the sides to a rooftop garden. The whole assembly is an irregular polyhedron and was created in response to the owner’s request that the house be “living in nature.” The unusual design maximizes use of the steep, natural slope of the lot, and to maximize the use of daylight for home lighting.

The living spaces of Hwa Hun flow naturally from the green garden spaces; in fact, in many instances, they are tucked under the various gardens: the forecourt garden, which welcomes entrance from the street, the inner court garden, the stair garden and the waterfall garden. All of the inwardly facing skins – those that do not front onto the street – are covered with greenery. This includes grass, fruit trees, and garden beds so that not only is the house shape itself a blossom, but the inner spaces of this dwelling will grow and bloom as the plants mature.

The Architects Make Use of Translucent and Transparent Building Materials

The room designs are comfortable and practical; each is flooded with light – a design feature made possible, in part, by use of translucent and transparent panels, alternated with other materials. The translucent and transparent inner panels – essential for bringing light into the various rooms – makes extensive use of Danpalon. For example, the living room door and the door of the second floor room are both made of Danpalon set in wooden frames. The walls for the living room and the second floor room are double walled panels of Danpalon, and so is the hallway ceiling. The canopy is created using Danpalon over steel pipe.

The opaque exterior makes use of exposed concrete and stainless steel roofing panels. Triangular recessed windows are finished with aluminum pairing and triple glass. A tempered glass handrail adds to the feeling of light. Connective seams are angled to add visual interest while managing the integrity of the roofing material.

A Home That Reflects and Makes Use of the Natural Environment

The end result is a living space that is visually interesting both outside and inside, and permits growing plants that range from grasses to the fruit trees previously mentioned. It even incorporates the waterfall garden, incorporating a peaceful and pleasing sound. Utilitarian areas, such as the parking garage with space for two cars and storage areas are tucked out of sight, yet are easy to access. The design includes a master bedroom and three smaller bedrooms, a master bath, living room, kitchen, dining room and utility room — there is even attic room at the top if a little more space is needed.

The view from the roof top garden, where young fruit trees are carefully braced, reveals that Hwa Hun is nestled in a valley, surrounded by tall mountains. The design of the house resembles those mountains, rooted as it is through the basement garage, then opening onto the street level from the first garden, then sweeping up the two outer stairs to the roof top garden. It would be very interesting to view this house at a time ten years in the future, when the trees will be more fully grown and when it will have been home to a family. It has all the potential to become a Blooming House, indeed.

Home designs such as Hwa Hun are made possible by modern building materials that maximize use of daylight without forcing the occupants to endure excessive solar gain or blinding glare.
